Tiniest planet yet found with sound

Astronomers have smashed the record for the smallest planet beyond our Solar System - finding one only slightly larger than our Moon.

To spot the tiny, probably rocky planet, they first needed to precisely measure the size of its host star.

They did so using "astroseismology" - effectively, turning tiny variations in the star's light into sounds.

A report in Nature describes the blistering, probably rocky planet, which orbits its star in just 13 days.

It is joined in this far-flung solar system by two other planets, one three-quarters Earth's size and one twice as large as Earth - all circling their star too closely to harbour liquid water or life.

Moving target

The record for smallest "exoplanet" is routinely being broken, as astronomers get better and better at finding them.

The best tool in the planet-hunters' toolbox is the Kepler space telescope, which stares at a fixed part of the sky, trying to detect the tiny dips in stars' light that happens when planets pass in front of them: what is called a transit event.

In its earliest days, the Kepler team tended to find large planets - Jupiter- and Neptune-sized behemoths. In more recent years, the catalogue of exoplanet has seen an increasing number of so-called super-Earths, up to about twice the radius of our planet.

Only recently has something definitively Earth-sized been found.

Exoplanets

But the new find is a planet just a third the size of that recent record-holder, smaller even than our Solar System's smallest planet, Mercury.

"I think it's an amazing technological achievement to be able to be able to detect small rocks like this," said Francois Fressin, a co-author of the paper based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"It means we're really in the arena where it's possible to detect all the planets of our Solar System, but around other stars," he told BBC News.

The find of Kepler 37b and its two companions can in part be ascribed to a wealth of data from the Kepler telescope; it has been recording data for nearly four years, and signals that would once have been too small to see have been slowly accumulating, with smaller planets becoming more apparent.

But telling just how small a given planet is depends on a relative measurement: how much light there is when the planet is and is not in front of the host star. The degree to which we can know the planet's size depends on how well we can know the host star's size.

That is where the science of astroseismology comes in - and a team of experts in this area of science at the University of Birmingham in the UK took a look at the data.

"Inside stars it's a very noisy environment, and that noise sets up sound waves that travel all the way through the star," said Birmingham astrophysicist Prof Yvonne Elsworth.

"Some of (the waves) will resonate, just like a musical instrument - the turbulence causes them to ring at frequencies that are characteristic of the star," Prof Elsworth told BBC News.

"If we look at the star we can see those oscillations, the amount of light we get from the star varies - slowly and by a very small amount - at frequencies that tell us what's going on inside the star."

And also like a musical instrument, those "resonant" frequencies tell researchers just how big the star actually is.

'Decade of discovery'

Together, the analyses point to the presence of three planets. Kepler 37b and c are about 30% and 74% as large as the Earth, and Kepler 37d is about twice Earth's radius.

The three orbit their star in 13, 21, and 40 days respectively - all within orbits just 20% of the Earth-Sun distance.

It is, in short, another interesting solar system to go in the burgeoning catalogues of exoplanets - and the notion that exoplanet news has been in plentiful supply in recent years is not lost on Dr Fressin.

"I understand that people could get bored by these successive announcements," he said.

"But hundreds or thousands of years from now, this will be remembered as the decade where discovery of other worlds of all kinds has been made possible."

University Archivist to Receive Catholic Library Association Award

John Waide, an archivist who has been with University Libraries for 38 years, has been selected to receive the 2013 Fons Sapientiae Award.

John Waide, University Archivist in the University Libraries Special Collections and alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named as the recipient of the 2013 Fons Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom) Award by the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Catholic Library Association.

A member of the University Libraries for 38 years, Waide has been University Archivist since 1989 and is the keeper of SLU's institutional memory. This award recognizes his role as an educator in the use of original archival sources for historical research and his deep knowledge of the history of SLU and of St. Louis.

"I was looking at some of the previous winners of this award and there are some pretty good people who've won it," Waide said. "I'm in good company, so it is an honor and I appreciate it."

Past SLU recipients to be honored include W. Charles Heiser, S.J., Lowrie John Daly, S.J., and William Faherty, S.J.

Waide teaches and speaks frequently about the University, and is a member of the Association of St. Louis Area Archivists, the St. Louis Area Religious Archivists, the Midwest Archives Conference, the Academy of Certified Archivists, and the Society of American Archivists.

According to the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Catholic Library Association, the Fons Sapientiae Award is given for "meritorious contributions by living persons or organizations for notable writing, editing, publishing, illustrating, promoting the purposes and goals of professional library organizations, or extraordinary service in allied fields."

Waide will be honored at the spring conference of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Catholic Library Association Saturday, March 9.

The Archives and Manuscripts unit of Special Collections acquires, preserves, and provides access to collections of enduring historical value for research, teaching, and administrative use of SLU students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i, as well as visiting researchers and the local community. Collections comprise university archives (university records and artifacts, faculty and alumnae/i papers, and SLU publications, dissertations, and theses), personal and institutional papers and manuscripts, audio-visual materials, and digital objects. Presumably, we'll quickly forget about all of these games ? perhaps even grow to hate them for their hilariously antiquated technologies ? after Sony's big PlayStation 2013 event tomorrow night, where the company is expected to unveil its next PlayStation.

Researchers coat spinal polymer implants with bioactive film to improve bonding with bone

Feb. 18, 2013 ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have for the first time successfully coated polymer implants with a bioactive film. The discovery should improve the success rate of such implants -- which are often used in spinal surgeries.

The polymer used in these implants, called PEEK, does not bond well with bone or other tissues in the body. This can result in the implant rubbing against surrounding tissues, which can lead to medical complications and the need for additional surgeries.

"We wanted to apply a bioactive coating that would allow the polymer implants to bond with surrounding tissues," says Dr. Afsaneh Rabiei, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State and lead author of a paper on the research. "The challenge was that these coatings need to be heated to 500 degrees Celsius, but the polymer melts at 300 C. We've finally solved the problem."

The first step in the new technique coats the implant with a thin film of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The second step applies a coating of hydroxyapatite, which is a calcium phosphate that bonds well with bone. The researchers then heat the hydroxyapatite layer using microwaves. The YSZ layer acts as a heat shield, preventing the PEEK from melting. Meanwhile, the heat gives the hydroxyapatite a crystalline structure that makes it more stable in the body, meaning that the calcium phosphate will dissolve more slowly -- promoting bonding with surrounding bone.

"We have received funding from the National Institutes of Health to proceed with animal testing to fine-tune this technique," Rabiei says. "Then we will move on to clinical testing."

The research was supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation.

Britain's PM Cameron says wants RBS to speed restructuring

MUMBAI (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron says he wants state-controlled Royal Bank of Scotland to speed up restructuring and has refused to rule out giving the government's share in the bank to the public.

The government owns 82 percent of RBS after pumping in 45 billion pounds ($70 billion) of capital when the bank neared collapse in 2008.

Speaking in India during a trip aimed at drumming up trade and investment, Cameron made it clear he was keen to return the bank to private ownership as soon as possible and wanted it to step up its efforts to overhaul itself.

"It was a very badly damaged institution but I think they are doing the right thing but obviously we want them to, where possible, accelerate the adjustments that they are making in terms of making it a strong organization," he said.

When asked to comment on reports the government was considering giving away its stake by 2015, Cameron said:

"These are all interesting questions for the future. The first job is to turn around the performance of RBS and to strengthen its balance sheet, strengthen its business and that's what (RBS Chief Executive) Stephen Hester and his team are doing.

"But I am keen to examine all possibilities for what we can do to put RBS in time back into the private sector."

In October, RBS said it was preparing to sell the shares in 2014, one year before the next general election, with the timing and sale structure up to the government. No share giveaway was mentioned.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in 2011 backed proposals to give the public shares in part-nationalized banks because taxpayer money had been used to keep the banking system alive.

At the time, the Treasury said it would "look at all options", but critics dismissed the idea as a headline-grabbing exercise.

Updating Facebook Like button with current URL

I have a comics website, Hitting Trees with Sticks that I'd like to add the Facebook liking button to.

As you can see, the homepage has thumbnails that you can click on... the thumbnail will load the full-sized comic on viewcomic.php based on that comic's ID. I thought it'd be easy enough to add the xfbml following their tutorial. I've tried adding the xfbml and the html5 versions.

Then I added the following like button code to my viewimage.php page where the unique $imgid will be:

But, for some reason, even when I go to the next comic id, and force a URL and page reload (I have to reload this way because I'm using javascript to allow users to press keys to navigate through images and need it to reload the page and ID)...
