Family affairs with Susan Hetherington - ABC Queensland ...

Big Brother is back (1984 by shake & stir theatre co at QPAC from tomorrow until September 1) ? and sold out Please may there be a return season. This is a most amazing piece of theatre bringing together traditional theatre, some mind blowing performances and multimedia in a production that will hit you much like Orwell?s book. It slaps you in the face, makes you question how much you are being controlled and how much your thoughts are your own and what it would take to make you betray those around you.

It will stick with you. Oceania; a Nation perpetually at war, where cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. A place Winston Smith calls home. By day, Winston is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to align the past with the radical political agenda of the ruling party and its illusive leader, Big Brother. By night, Winston pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia in an attempt to rebel against the oppressive regime set down by the party and maintain some control over his otherwise totally controlled life. When Winston and Julia are discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. Locked in the Ministry of Love and interrogated by the quietly terrifying O'Brien, Winston is beaten, manipulated and subjected to sickening torture in an attempt to make him reject dreams of liberation and understand that free thought and logic is the only true enemy. From the team that brought you the sold out season of Animal Farm, this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell's final novel screaming into the present. Strap yourself in for this terrifically frightening theatrical event featuring a cast of some of Queensland's most acclaimed artists, set against a dynamic digital backdrop. This production is sure to stun as it contemplates the ultimate crime against humanity - the total destruction of truth, freedom and individuality in favor of surveillance, obedience and conformity.

The Harbinger by The Dead Puppet Society until September 1 at La Boite Theatre If Tim Burton was to do theatre it would probably look exactly like Dead Puppet?s Society?s production of The Harbinger. This is a dark, modern fairy tale that is Grimm in the original sense of the word. It?s for adults but the puppetry will appeal to big kids as well. La Boite Rating Low-level, infrequent coarse language; Low-level violence ; Scenes that may frighten young audiences The Harbinger is suitable for Years 8 - 12 Drama and English students, including those studying collage drama, Australian theatre, and mixed-media performance. It will also be of interest to students studying design and visual art. An old man hides away in a dusty old bookshop, forgotten and alone with only a handful of beautiful memories as comfort. Gone are the days of magnificent apple orchards, rowboats on crystal streams and picnics under the moon. Gone is the woman he loves. Throughout the long years of his life, the old man has watched the magic in the world disappear, his crowded city sink into misery, and his nightmares come to life and stalk the streets. Haunted by painful memories of a much happier time and place, he toils away long days to forget. But when a young girl arrives, desperate for protection, the old man is forced to relive the pain and pleasures of his own past and uncovers a chance to change the city forever? It is wonderful to see a rebirth of the art of puppetry in this fantastically staged production

This week

Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb at the Queensland Museum Featuring more than 100 ancient objects, including four exceptionally preserved mummies from the British Museum's internationally renowned Egyptian collection, Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb explores the rituals of life, death and the after-life in Ancient Egypt. This is fascinating but not for little ones ? they will be bored. To make the most of the exhibition you have to read a great deal. I?ve discovered ? you can prebook (probably a good idea at busy times but it?s more expensive) . If Monday?s experience is anything to go by I have discovered that the first session in the morning at 9.30 is quiet because the school groups aren?t there yet Tickets: Adults $21.45 Concession $19.25 Children (4-15 Years) $12.65. Family tickets 2 Adults/Concession + 2 Children (4-15 Years) $59

OVO, a new family production by Cirque du Soleil, in Brisbane until September 2 It is not a case of seen one, seen them all. The new Cirque du Soleil production to hit Brisbane is one of the most beautiful and certainly most family friendly shows by the franchise. When it comes to circus nothing really rivals the mesmerising acts and incredible staging of Cirque. Your jaw will drop in disbelief again and again (if you have time to pick it back up again after the first time). The theme of insects in this one is cute and playful and very easy for kids to take in and love. The cast of OVO is comprised of 54 performing artists from 16 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning flying trapeze act, in which six flyers soar 40 feet in the air, making this the biggest act of its kind to ever be presented under a big top by Cirque du Soleil. It combines many circus disciplines, including banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair. The finale features 20 artists running, jumping and leaping up a 24-foot vertical wall. But while there is no inappropriate content little ones may get bored and an 8pm start means that the matinee is definitely the best option for most families (especially if the car park problems on opening night are not resolved). It is expensive (cheapest tickets $84 adults and $64 for kids but family tickets are available) but you can certainly see where the money went and if you can afford it you will not be disappointed.

The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stephenson at Brisbane Arts Theatre until September 8 Scotland, in the late 1800s. Edinburgh Medical College is at the forefront of anatomical research. But free market forces also apply, particularly when the demand for cadavers outstrips supply. And as the wind bites and nights grow colder, who?s going to miss a few ladies of the night anyway?

Mind your language

What would be a ?moderate? amount of swearing? Apparently f bombs in one episode of a mini series fits the bill. There was a bit of chatter on social media about the level of swearing in Howzat Now I think the show was awesome and I am not suggesting for a minute that the content be toned down if that is how Packer spoke but it should be classified appropriately. There seems to be a real issue in television program classification where the system relies on self regulation without reference to an outside body For instance The Slap was M when it appeared on TV, MA when it came out on video and had to be classified. And the bar is moving really quickly considering that it was 1975 that Graham Kennedy made a crow sound disguising a bad word People are clearly much more tolerant but viewers have a right to know with more certainty what the content of the program is.

Regrets I?ve had a few

More than three quarters of parents have at least one thing they regret doing, or not doing, during their child?s first few years, according to a new survey of parents released this week The survey came up with a list of 20 things parents wish they had done differently in their child?s early years. 1. Working too much 2. Worrying about the little things 3. Not playing with them more 4. Not going on more holidays 5. Not taking enough photos 6. Spending too much time away 7. Not filming enough events or milestones in their lives 8. Not taking them on 'big' holidays such as Disneyland 9. Not encouraging them to take up a/more hobbies 10. Not having a shared hobby 11. Not reading enough to them at bedtime 12. Spending too much time worrying about housework 13. Not taking them swimming more 14. Not letting them take part in messy activities more often 15. Not teaching them to swim earlier 16. Not being at some of the milestones in their life 17. Not making enough of Christmas/birthdays with them 18. Being too over-protective 19. Always waiting for the next milestone instead of enjoying the current one 20. Not enjoying days out more

You have to laugh

The University of London has launched a global research project into what makes babies laugh. Parents with children under the age of two are invited to take part in the online survey to find out about early evidence if laughter. They want to find out what made baby laugh and who was present. They believe it will provide insight into how babies? brain work and how early they are able to get the joke. They are also collecting videos of laughing babies which will be shared on a blog. Details are at http://babylaughter.net/survey/ [Non-ABC website. ABC takes no responsibility for content found on this website].

Gramping

First there was camping, then its glamorous cousin glamping now we have gramping. More than a third of families rely on grandparents to look after youngsters during school holidays, according to a study released in the UK this week. More than one in four take their grandchildren away on holiday, according to the survey. Camping and caravaning is proving to be a popular holiday activity for grandparents and kids to do together.

Susan?s scary statistic

More kids are drinking artificially-sweetened beverages, new research suggests. The US federal nutrition survey revealed 12.5 percent of children consumed artificially-sweetened beverages over a 24-period, double the percentage of children from data collected less than a decade before. Researchers say they are concerned because there are no studies that have looked at the long-term health effects of artificial sweeteners in growing children." It is possible that children who consume artificially-sweetened beverages may experience weight gain or other health problems.

Wellness at Club Med - Travel Agent

August 21, 2012 By: David Moseder Travel Agent

?

Even in tough economic times, many Americans place a premium on travel for their health. It?s no surprise then that spa travel is thriving as clients continue to cite spa facilities as a prime consideration among services and amenities in influencing their choice for vacation accommodations.

More and more of these travelers are looking for a regimen that goes beyond pampering?and spas are responding with increasing emphasis on well-being and prevention. This trend jibes with Club Med?s ?active wellness? philosophy, a total approach to fitness for which, at a great number of resorts, spas are a vital component, along with yoga, Pilates, Zumba and Aqua Zumba, stretching, cardio and weight training, and fitness classes, as well as an extensive array of sports facilities.

When all-inclusive resorts pioneer Club Med launched its first series of agent training programs (1999-2004) with Travel Agent University, wellness was not emphasized, relegated to a few mentions of ?well-being menus? and onsite masseuses. In the new Club Med Expert Agent course launching this month, there is a section dedicated to ?Active Wellness and Spas? as a target market.

It all goes back to 2005, when Club Med decided to reposition itself as an upscale product, leading to $530 million worth of major upgrades, including the addition or revamping of spas at several properties as a key component. The company?s website now identifies more than two dozen properties specifically as ?Spa Resorts? (although they are much more than that), where your clients will find treatments and products by such prominent spa brands as Biotherme, Carita, Cinq Mondes, Comfort Zone, Decleor, L?Occitane, Mandara, Nuxe and Payot.

L?Occitane at Sandpiper Bay

Perhaps the most significant and high-profile spa development, not to mention the most accessible for North American travelers, was the opening earlier this year of the L?Occitane spa at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in St. Lucie, FL. ?It marked the conclusion of a major $28 million renovation project for the resort,? says Xavier Mufraggi, CEO of Club Med North America. ?The addition of the spa was a major component in the repositioning of Club Med Sandpiper Bay as the ultimate health and wellness retreat.?

?Well-being is at the core of both the Club Med and L?Occitane philosophies, which aligns perfectly with what our customers are looking for?a way to balance their lives through enriching activities and relaxation,? Mufraggi adds. The original Club Med Spa by L?Occitane is situated at Club Med Opio-en-Provence, France, and additional ones can be found at Club Med resorts in La Palmyre, France and in Yabuli, China.

Sandpiper Bay is also home to one of the innovative Club Med Fitness Academies, led at the Florida resort by Idrissa Diallo, who has trained and worked with golf and tennis pros and Olympic athletes. Beginners and advanced students can take advantage of a variety of training options, from basic cardio and weightlifting programs to professional-caliber athlete training. These Fitness Academies are also available at Club Med resorts in Columbus Isle, Bahamas; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Turks and Caicos; Cancun, Mexico; and Otranto, Italy.

Assange asylum seen as travesty of justice in Sweden

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - While WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange battles to stay in Britain, Sweden is incensed he has belittled one of the world's most respected justice systems and questioned a nation famed for welcoming - not extraditing - political refugees.

Assange, hiding from arrest in the Ecuadorean embassy where he has been granted diplomatic asylum, says he fears the United States will try to extradite him if he goes to Sweden for questioning over allegations of rape and sexual molestation.

Assange's speech from the embassy balcony on Sunday focused on what he saw as his persecution by the United States, but did not mention the rape allegations.

Assange's accusations have infuriated many in Sweden, who say the stories of two women who made the sex crime allegations have played second fiddle to unwarranted theories of a U.S.-led conspiracy to extradite him with the help of allies in Europe.

"Assange has evolved into a megalomaniac rhetorician, who seems to have very little contact left with reality," Sweden's Svenska Dagbladet daily said after his embassy balcony speech.

Another newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, said the legal process had to be followed through and defended Sweden as a nation that upheld the "rule of law".

After Ecuador granted Assange asylum, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt wrote: "Our firm legal and constitutional system guarantees the rights of each and everyone. We firmly reject any accusations to the contrary."

Along with other Nordic countries, Sweden sees itself as a legal safe haven and it has welcomed thousands of leftist refugees from dictatorships in Latin America in the 1970s to Iraqis fleeing the U.S.-led invasion and war after 2003.

The World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index 2011 report ranked Sweden first of 66 nations on fundamental legal rights.

THE RAPE CASE

That does not mean the rape accusations have not been criticized. Assange faces questioning over incidents with two women that involved a degree of consensual sex and other acts some critics say would not be called rape in other countries.

Evan well-known feminist Naomi Wolf criticized the international judicial hunt for Assange, writing that she personally knew "1.3 million guys" with similar complaints made against them by women.

A first prosecutor opened an investigation in 2010 on allegations of rape after two women with whom Assange had sex reported him to the police, only to drop the rape accusation and pursue less serious allegations. Then a more senior prosecutor reopened the rape case a couple of weeks later - giving fodder to Assange's supporters who see a conspiracy against him.

Assange had sex with two women within days of each other during a visit to Sweden in August 2010. Both women went to the police after having had sex with Assange, wanting him to have an HIV test.

In the case of the first woman - who helped Assange arrange his visit to Sweden - he is alleged to have held her arms down physically and spread her legs during what Assange says was consensual sex in her apartment, where he was staying.

With the second woman, he is alleged to have had sex with her while she was asleep and without wearing a condom after consensual sex with a condom, according to copies of the police questioning of the witnesses, of which Reuters has a copy.

The prosecutor's office has sought Assange for questioning over suspected rape to a less severe degree, unlawful coercion and two cases of sexual molestation.

The rape allegation is the most serious and if proven in court could lead to up to four years in jail.

The lawyer for the two women stood by the allegations and criticized Assange for not coming back to be questioned.

"It's an abuse of the asylum instrument, the purpose of which is to protect people from persecution and torture ... It's not about that here," Claes Borgstrom told Reuters.

"He doesn't risk being handed over to the United States for torture or death penalty. He should be brought to justice in Sweden. This is completely absurd."

At the same time, Assange might not have that much to worry about, said law professor Christian Diesen. He noted that in practice nine out of 10 cases of alleged rape are dropped by prosecutors before coming to court.

"But where there are no witnesses, no pictures and no technical evidence, only the accusation of the woman against the man and he says that sex was consensual, then normally the situation is that the word of the woman will not be enough for a conviction," Diesen told said.

EXTRADITION

Assange's supporters say that the United States is preparing a grand jury indictment in Virginia to extradite him and point to the fact that Swedish prosecutors have refused to travel to the United Kingdom to question Assange, as well as refusing to discount any extradition. No public request for extradition has been made by U.S. authorities.

Swedish courts make the decision on whether someone like Assange should be extradited. The government can still reject a Supreme Court decision to extradite but cannot force an extradition if the court says no to the petition.

But Swedish legal experts said any extradition to the United States would be a complicated and long drawn out process, whose success is far from certain. Assange's fame would be an obstacle.

"There would be a storm in the media worldwide stopping any extradition. That would be the best guarantee he would have, together with the formal conditions," said Sven-Erik Alhem, a former prosecutor and a commentator on legal matters in Sweden.

Anne Ramberg, secretary general of the Swedish Bar Association, an organization of practicing lawyers, said Sweden could not send someone to the United States if that person faced the death penalty or if the request was for a crime deemed to be a political crime.

"The risk that he would be extradited from Sweden, in my opinion, is very, very, very small. In any case, it is not a bigger risk here than if he is in England," Ramberg said.

But Sweden's record is not always so clean.

Supporters of Assange point to Sweden going along with the CIA in 2001 in sending two men to Egypt during the U.S. spy agency's anti-terror campaign.

Both men were later released and given 3 million Swedish crowns ($450,000) in compensation from the Swedish state.

Ironically, the U.S. State Department in its 2011 human annual rights report also criticized Sweden for keeping prisoners in pre-trial detention for too long and said prisons subjected detainees "to extended periods in isolation and limited their access to visitors, mail, and exercise".

For Assange's supporters, any extradition risk is too much.

"We know for sure that the risk is not zero. But how big the risk is - if it's 10, 20, 50 or 100 percent, nobody knows," Per Samuelsson, Assange's main Swedish lawyer, told Reuters.

WWE Champion CM Punk confronts Jerry "The King" Lawler and John Cena
On Raw 1,000, Jerry "The King" Lawler said that CM Punk turned his back on the WWE Universe. Twenty-four hours after retaining the WWE Title in a Triple Threat Match against Big Show and John Cena at SummerSlam, WWE Champion CM Punk demanded an apology from the WWE Hall of Famer. But before Punk could get his apology, John Cena made his way to the ring.

The Straight Edge Superstar was clearly unhappy with Cena's interruption, claiming that since WrestleMania, the champion has taken a "back seat" to Cena, The Rock, Brock Lesnar and Triple H. Punk explained to Cena that he didn't mind out of respect. The WWE Champion reminded Cena and the WWE Universe how many times he has defeated the Cenation leader. With that in mind, CM Punk named his one condition for accepting the match: Cena must admit that The Second City Saint is the ?Best in the World.?

Cena retorted that despite nine months of not being the WWE Champion, the Cenation was still strong because of the one thing CM Punk desired: respect. Cena refused to adhere to Punk's demand, because in his heart, he is the best.

The 10-time WWE Champion highlighted the stark contrasts between himself and the current champion and how he never demanded anything from anyone. Willing to sacrifice the No. 1 contendership, Cena would not give Punk what he wanted. Cena reminded The Straight Edge Superstar that if he wanted to prove he was the best once and for all, he must face Cena at Night of Champions.

After the Cenation leader left the ring, CM Punk once again turned his attention to Jerry Lawler, calling the WWE Hall of Famer into the ring to once again demand an apology. Lawler apologized, but the WWE Champion was still not satisfied and wanted "The King" to declare him the ?Best in the World.?

The Memphis, Tenn., native refused and tried to return to the announce table only for CM Punk to kick him from behind. As Raw came to a close, the WWE Champion, still lacking whatever respect he felt was deserved, silently looked down at Lawler and to the WWE Universe.

Hit the Road, Barack: Newsweek Cover Calls For Obama Defeat

It’s not quite Time’s breastfeeding cover, but Newsweek is generating plenty of headlines with its new controversial cover story calling for President Obama's defeat.

The title says it all: “Hit the Road, Barack. Why We Need a New President.”

Niall Ferguson delves a list of what he calls Obama's broken promises and budget failures, advocating instead for the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

Obama Newsweek Cover

In a statement addressing the cover, Newsweek’s executive editor, Justine Rosenthal, said they wanted to give readers a taste of both sides of the aisle.

"These are arguments; they aren’t just reported pieces," she says.

This certainly isn’t the first time Newsweek has had a controversial cover of late, having dubbed Obama “The First Gay President” earlier this year.

The magazine's penchant for buzzy covers extends beyond politics: Its most talked about may have been of Princess Diana and Kate Middleton.

Regarding the Obama cover, you can follow the link to read why the publication feels we need a new president, though it's really nothing new.

If you think Obama deserves four more years, you know the counter-arguments. If you want him out, you'll probably agree with the bulk of it.

Either way, it doesn't offer much in the way of compelling insight and appears geared more towards generating viral buzz than hard-hitting journalism.
