Major quake off Philippines causes panic but minor damage

MANILA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday killing one person, damaging roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, a politician and authorities said.

The quake was centered off the east coast, 91 miles off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for much of the region, but cancelled it about two hours later.

Philippine authorities maintained their tsunami warning for longer, after ordering residents to get out of coastal areas immediately. They cancelled it more than three hours after the quake.

"Residents can now return to their homes. It's safe now, the danger of a tsunami has passed," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology said.

The mayor of Guiuan, Annalisa Quan, told local radio there was no report of major damage.

The head of the national disaster agency, Benito Ramos, said one woman was killed in Cagayan de Oro town on the island of Mindanao when heavy rain and the quake triggered a landslide that buried her house. A child was injured.

Samar congressman Ben Evardone told local radio some bridges and roads were damaged and people had fled from coastal areas in panic, seeking refuge inland.

"We're used to quakes here so residents immediately went to higher ground," Pinky Almaite, a resident of Sulat, a seaside town in Eastern Samar, told Reuters.

"Many were running as they took with them whatever their hands could carry - flashlights, food, clothes, some even took their cows."

Large parts of Samar and Leyte province had no power or internet connections.

"The only lights you see are from vehicles in the streets headed to higher ground," said a radio reporter in the town of Borongan.

The tsunami warning was initially issued for the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific including the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Small waves of about 16 cm (6 inches) had hit a southern Philippine island, the seismology agency said, and warned that bigger ones could follow and residents were ordered to get to ground 10 meters (30 feet) above sea level.

The region has been hit by two huge quakes in the past decade. At least 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries were killed in a quake and tsunami off Indonesia in 2004.

Last year, an earthquake and tsunami off Japan's northeastern coast killed about 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years after waves battered a nuclear power station.

'Books, Antiques and Apples' ? Chateau Cargill Wedding Photography

Michelle and Devon got married in Surrey BC at the Chateau Cargill.

They ?both got ready at their house in Langley, bride on the main floor, and the groom in much cooler basement! Then we went and did photos down the road deep into the property. The mosquitos were vicious, but the photos turned out well.

Then it was off to the chateau. Their entire theme was intricately thought out, from each book being carefully picked to go with the colours, to all the knick-knacks placed on the pillars and throughout the decor.

It was a beautiful wedding, and we were so happy to be able to shoot it.

AMD teases next-gen Steamroller CPU, aims to Bulldoze the competition

AMD teases nextgen Steamroller CPU, aims to Bulldoze the competition

AMD's Bulldozer CPUs remind us of Betamax (or MiniDisc), in that its superlative design hasn't been embraced thanks to one or two humbling limitations. However, Mark Papermaster, Sunnyvale's new CTO, took to the stage at Hot Chips to show how he's changing the situation with the third-generation Steamroller architecture. It's rowing back on the more experimental elements of the design, scrapping the single shared fetch-and-decode hardware in favor of dual-cores that should double the amount of instructions it can handle. It's hoping to make performance gains of 15 percent, clawing back some of Intel's lead, and is considering roping in the GPU to help with the heavy-hitting in future versions. The chips will be built at Globalfoundries 28-nanometer line and are hoped to be out at some point next year.

Mystery surrounding death of two sisters nearly 50 years ago finally solved

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have identified the genetic cause of a rare and fatal bone disease by studying frozen skin cells that were taken from a child with the condition almost fifty years ago. Their study, which details how the MT1-MMP gene leads to the disease known as Winchester syndrome, appears in the August 23, 2012 online edition of The American Journal of Human Genetics.

In 1969, Patricia Winchester, MD, a pediatric radiologist in New York City, was asked to diagnose two young sisters who were losing bone in their hands and feet, developing severe arthritis in their fingers and losing movement of their shoulders, elbows, hips and knees because of osteoporosis. The frozen skin cells that were recently studied by principal investigator, John Martignetti, MD, PhD, and his team of researchers in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at Mount Sinai, had been taken from one of the sisters. Ultimately, the disease rendered the girls incapable of moving without assistance, and proved fatal.

The cause of the disease has remained unknown until now, when the study's lead authors, post-doctoral students, Rebecca Mosig, PhD and Brad Evans, PhD, zeroed in on the MT1-MMP gene.

"This gene encodes an enzyme that needs to be specifically positioned on the membranes of cells to function correctly," explains Dr. Martignetti. "What we discovered is that these girls had a gene mutation which resulted in incorrect shuttling of the protein. Instead of being directed to the cell surface where it could interact with the outside environment, the mutant protein never reached its final, correct destination and remained trapped in the cell's cytoplasm. Mislocalized, it lost its ability to function and the children developed severe arthritis and bone."

The enzyme lost its ability to interact with another disease-casuing protein, MMP-2. Dr. Martignetti's team had previously identifed mutations in the MMP-2 gene as the cause of a similar group of bone disorders in children.

The researchers says this recent discovery should provide diagnostic clarity and insight into possible treatments for children with Winchester syndrome, and other bone disorders, and for people in the general population who have osteoporosis and arthritis.

Ask Sujeiry: About Long Distance Relationships | Sujeiry Gonzalez

Dear Sujeiry,

Just a question for you. What is your opinion about long distance relationships?

Sincerely,

Long Distance Love

Dear Long Distance Love,

My take on long distance relationships is no different than real relationships. If you want it to work, then you put effort and love into the relationship. You and your significant other, whether near or far, will nurture it and it will blossom.

Take my love story as an example, and that of many other single girls in the city. I?ve been in local relationships all my life, and they haven?t worked out. Why? Because we weren?t on the same page and the love wasn?t there.

So, I don?t believe long distance relationships are unrealistic or impossible. Sure, in theory there are many more challenges in a long distance relationship. You don?t get to see the person as often. He or she may meet someone else. But, doesn?t the same occur with couples who are close? How many relationships, near or far, end due to infidelity? How many women complain because they don?t spend enough time with their partner?

There are also many positive attributes to a long distance relationship. You can pace the relationship. You can really get to know the person via dialogue and and build a foundation. And, when the time comes, a conversation takes place regarding the future. Is the relationship worth a move? Do you move in together? How does you and your significant other make it work long term?

A long distance relationship almost forces the people involved to make serious decisions about their future.?And there is nothing wrong with that.

Love strongly?and?wisely,

Sujeiry

Cyber spying expands in Iran after operation is blown: researchers

BOSTON (Reuters) - The scope of a cyber espionage campaign targeting Iran and other parts of the Middle East has widened, even after security experts blew the operation's cover last month, according to the research firm that discovered the Mahdi Trojan.

Israeli security company Seculert said that it has identified about 150 new Mahdi victims over the past six weeks as the developers of the virus have changed the code to evade detection from anti-virus programs. That has brought the total number of infections found so far to nearly 1,000, the bulk of them in Iran.

"These guys continue to work," Seculert Chief Technology Officer Aviv Raff said via telephone from the company's headquarters in Israel.

The decision to keep the operation running implies that Mahdi's operators were not particularly worried about getting caught, said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior researcher with Kaspersky Lab, which has collaborated with Seculert in analyzing Mahdi.

Schouwenberg said that some viruses are designed for stealth because they become useless if they are discovered. He pointed to the Stuxnet Trojan that targeted Iran's nuclear program in 2010. After that customer-built virus was uncovered by a security researcher in Belarus, authorities in Iran discovered it in a uranium enrichment facility that it had targeted.

Mahdi is a "less professional" operation that runs on technology built with widely available software, according to Schouwenberg.

"If the quality of your operation is not that high, then maybe you don't care about being discovered," he said. "But the scary thing is that it can still be effective."

The Mahdi Trojan lets remote attackers steal files from infected PCs and monitor emails as well as instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers.

The firms said they believed multiple gigabytes of data have been uploaded from targeted machines.

Targets of Mahdi include critical infrastructure firms, engineering students, financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran, according to the two security firms.

The bulk of the new victims were in Iran, which is where most infections have occurred to date, according to Seculert, though a few were identified in the United States and Germany.

The two firms have declined to identify specific victims.

Raff said that he suspects the campaign is being run by hacker activists, or "hactivists," who are either funded by a government or provide information they collect to a nation for ideological reasons. He declined to say which country might be involved.

Seculert and Kaspersky dubbed the campaign Mahdi after a term referring to the prophesied redeemer of Islam because evidence suggests the attackers used a folder with that name as they developed the software to run the project.

They also included a text file named mahdi.txt in the malicious software that infected target computers.

River Park Real Estate Agent ? Allan Sanchez | Allan Sanchez ...

River Park Real Estate Agent ? Allan Sanchez River Park Real Estate Agent - Allan Sanchez

It?s always my pleasure to sell a home in an old, established neighborhood like River Park in the East Sacramento area.? I just listed and sold this River Park 4 bedroom home on Minerva Ave. to an adorable family, excited to move to this gem of a neighborhood.? River Park has large trees, great schools, and close proximity to downtown, Sac State, and shopping.? It even has a sweet neighborhood park with river access to Paradise Beach!

Prices in River Park are currently at an average of $251 per square foot.? This is much higher than most neighborhoods in Sacramento because of the ambiance and character this neighborhood has?.straight out of 1955!? 70% of my business is short sales?I am a short sale specialist that is, but you won?t find many short sales in River Park.? Even in this market, most sellers are traditional sellers with equity.? River Park is solid neighborhood!

It?s not always cupcakes and cookies to sell a home in River Park.? Because the homes are older, there is usually maintenance issues, pest work, or items that need to be repaired.? It?s very important sellers work with an agent experienced in selling older homes to insure they are protected from requests for endless repairs, pest clearances, and other items that eat into their net proceeds.? An agent who just sells newer homes has no idea the issues that can arise and how to prevent them! Experienced agents can make sure that contracts and counter offers and written in such a way that it?s a win-win for both the buyer and seller.

Have more questions about River Park?? Let me know!

Fossil skeleton of strange, ancient digging mammal clears up 30-year-old evolutionary debate

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Shortly after dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops went extinct 65 million years ago, Earth's ancient landscapes were filled with unusual mammals only distantly related to those alive today. Until recently, one of these creatures, Ernanodon antelios, was only known from a single, highly distorted specimen that raised many questions about its habits and evolutionary relationships.

In the most recent issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, scientists describe a second specimen of Ernanodon that sheds new light on this curious beast from the dawn of the "Age of Mammals."

The remarkable new skeleton comes from rocks in Mongolia that were deposited 57 million years ago during a period known as the Paleocene Epoch.

"Ernanodon is a unique find and represents one of the most complete skeletons ever collected from the Paleocene of the Naran Bulak locality," said Alexander Agadjanian of the Borissiak Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, co-author of the study.

The first specimen was discovered by a team of Soviet paleontologists in 1979 but remained unstudied for more than thirty years. The new specimen preserves most of the arms, legs, and backbone of the badger-sized animal, including many bones that were not preserved in the first specimen. The authors of the new study made detailed comparisons among the bones of Ernanodon and those of modern mammals and concluded that Ernanodon was highly specialized for digging. It may have dug for food, for shelter, or both.

"Only a handful of Asian Paleocene mammals are known by their postcranial skeleton, which makes Ernanodon a unique source of very important information about its habits, lifestyle, and affinities," said Peter Kondrashov of A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, lead author of the study.

The strong limbs and large claws of Ernanodon, combined with its unusual, simplified teeth, have caused much confusion about its evolutionary relationships. Some scientists thought Ernanodon was an ancient relative of modern armadillos and anteaters, whereas other scientists thought Ernanodon was more closely related to a group of African and Asian ant-eating mammals known as pangolins or "scaly anteaters." The new study concludes that Ernanodon was a closer relative of pangolins than armadillos and anteaters, but that it represents a very early side branch of the pangolin family tree.

"Few other fossil mammals presented as many controversies in the scientific world as Ernanodon did and we are glad the new skeleton helped us resolve them," Kondrashov added.

Collie - Azure - Medium - Adult - Dog

Note: If you are viewing this pet on Petfinder, the pet may show incorrectly as a mixed breed. This pet is NOT a mixed breed.
Azure is a 2 year old smooth coat collie - beautiful blue merle. She has just been to the vet for some dental work and is now on the road to recovery. She's a little on the 'round' side and will benefit from a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. She bonds quickly with her people, and gets along well with other dogs, though she would probably do best in a home with another male dog to play with. She is silly and loves to goof around; she will need a family that will use positive training to help her learn good doggie manners and not be too mouthy or rough. Azure will also need to continue gentle exposure to the 'outside world' from a patient owner - she is becoming more confident with new sounds and experiences, but still has a way to go. Azure has tons of potential and With a little help and encouragement, she is going to make a great addition to someone's home.

If you are interested in rescuing a collie, please complete this short adoption questionnaire <http://www.savecollies.org/questionnaire.html> . Our standard adoption fee is $350. This fee helps us to cover the expense of providing each dog with a Health Exam, Rabies/DHPP vaccines, Heartworm Test, Heartworm Preventative, Flea & Tick Protection, Microchip, Neuter/Spay, and a Bath.

Iran, UN nuclear watchdog fail to strike a - World News Tomorrow

World News

WORLD NEWS ? DUSHANBE, The UN nuclear watchdog and Iran failed on August 24 to strike a deal aimed at allaying concerns about suspected nuclear weapons research by Tehran, a setback in efforts to resolve the stand-off diplomatically before any Israeli or U.S. military action, Reuters reports.

A flurry of bellicose rhetoric from some Israeli politicians this month has fanned speculation that Israel might hit Iran?s nuclear sites before the U.S. presidential election in November.

According to Reuters, tensions rose another notch on the eve of Friday?s talks between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) when diplomatic sources said Iran had installed many more uranium enrichment centrifuges at its Fordow underground site.

While the new machines are not yet operating, the move reaffirmed Iranian defiance of international demands on it to suspend enrichment and may strengthen the Israeli belief that toughened sanctions and concerted diplomacy are failing to make the Islamic Republic change course.

?The discussions today were intensive but important differences remain between Iran and the UN that prevented agreement,? Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA?s chief inspector, told journalists after about seven hours of talks with an Iranian delegation in Vienna.? ?At the moment we have no plans for another meeting.?

Little headway appeared to have been made on the IAEA?s most urgent request ? access for its inspectors to the Parchin military site where the agency believes Iran has done explosives tests relevant for developing a nuclear weapons capability.

Iran?s ambassador to the Vienna-based IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, said that ?undoubtedly some progress? was made but that differences remained.? ?Because it is a very complex issue ? issues related to national security of a member state are something very delicate,? the veteran Iranian diplomat said.? ?But I have to say that we are moving forward ? and we are going to continue this process so that we at the end of the day will have a framework agreed by both sides.?? Soltanieh had said before the talks began: ?Both sides are trying to bridge the gap.?

The diplomatic sources who revealed the expansion of centrifuge capacity at Fordow also said satellite imagery indicated Iran had used a brightly colored tent-like structure to cover a building at Parchin, increasing concern about a possible removal of evidence of illicit past nuclear work there.

Israel signaled its patience with diplomacy was fading.? ?Only yesterday we received additional proof that Iran is continuing accelerated progress towards achieving nuclear weapons and is totally ignoring international demands,? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the talks ended.

But in Washington, an official of President Barack Obama?s administration said the new centrifuges, while concerning, would not significantly change the amount of time Iran would need to ?break out? of its treaty obligations and construct a nuclear device.? ?This work ? does not build confidence in their intent and it further demonstrates their failure to fulfill their obligations,? said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.? ?But, it is also not a game-changer.?

Iran, Israel?s arch-enemy and the world?s No. 5 oil exporter, insists it wants nuclear energy for more electricity to serve a rapidly growing population, not nuclear weapons, and has threatened wide-ranging reprisals if attacked.

Nackaerts, the IAEA?s global chief of inspections, said before the meeting that the broader goal was a deal on greater, overall inspector access to answer the UN watchdog?s questions about possible military dimensions to Iran?s nuclear program.

It was the first meeting between the two sides since discussions in early June petered out inconclusively, dashing previous hopes that an accord might be on the cards.

Friday?s talks were separate from Tehran?s negotiations with six world powers that have made little progress since resuming in April after a 15-month hiatus, but the focus on suspicions about Iran?s nuclear ambitions means they are still closely linked.

Washington has said there is still time for diplomatic pressure to work in pressing Iran to curb its enrichment program, which is the immediate priority of the six powers ? the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany.

Clarke, Wade fifties take Australia to 272-8

Michael Clarke and Matthew Wade hit attractive half-centuries to take Australia to 272-8 against Afghanistan in the day-night international on Saturday.

Clarke hit a 94-ball 75 while Wade also made 75 off 108 balls before Afghanistan's bowlers put the brakes on the scoring on a dry Sharjah Stadium pitch which made strokeplay difficult under sultry 35-plus degree heat.

The match is the first-ever limited overs international between the two countries and only Afghanistan's second against a full Test playing side after they played Pakistan in February this year.

Australia, who lost opener David Warner (24) to seamer Shapoor Zadran in the seventh over, were coasting along with skipper Clarke and Wade adding an invluable 131 runs for the second wicket.

But Australia lost four wickets in the space of 42 runs as off-spinner Mohammad Nabi (2-50) broke the stand by catching Wade off a return drive from his own bowling.

Wade, opening the innings in the absence of Shane Watson who is not on the tour because of injury, hit two fours and a towering six.

In his next over Nabi had debutant Glenn Maxwell caught at long-on for two to leave Australia at 172-3.

Clarke, who hit three boundaries and a six, was stumped off spinner Samiullah Shinwari as he jumped out of the crease but missed the ball.

Michael Hussey (49) and George Bailey (23) added a rapid 53 for the sixth wicket in just five overs to ensure Australia put up a fighting total.

Hussey's 37-ball knock had three sixes and two fours.

Karim Sadiq took wickets in the last over to finish with 2-22.

Lose Weight Through Juice Only Diets | Fitness And Health World

After the drinking of water, juice recipes for weight loss have to be one of the most natural and best ways to stay healthy as you lose weight. Forget about the fad diets, the celebrity endorsed virtual starvation weight loss programs, adding natural healthy juices to your daily eating plan is streets ahead.

The first thing you?re going to have to do is to invest in a juicer ? and I say invest because that is exactly what it will be for you and your body. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and prices and though some of them can do a variety of other things such as pulping and chopping, a basic juicer will serve you well to try out some juice recipes for weight loss.

Decide on your favorite fruits and vegetables and make sure that the produce you use is as fresh as you can find. The great thing about using juices to help you lose weight is that what you come up with can be as personal as the clothes you wear and how you wear them. No one, is going to be preparing and drinking the same juice recipes as you in the same way as you!

Fancy a carrot and apple juice for breakfast? Then simply wash your carrots, peel and core your apple and throw them into a juicer, in whatever quantities you desire and add a splash of lemon juice and you have yourself a lovely breakfast juice. A juice like this is stuffed full of beta carotene, iron and vitamin C and so if this doesn?t get you going in the morning then simply throw in even more vegetables.

The real key to finding and using juice recipes for weight loss is to make sure that you try a variety of juices. Think about this, the number one reason that many people fail to lose weight is because they get bored with what they are eating. They crave their favorite foods and feel disgruntled that they are not ?allowed? to eat and enjoy them. Now, there is virtually no way you should fall into the trap of getting bored with your juices. Just make sure that you are mixing them up regularly and adding or taking away from them.

For instance, that apple and carrot breakfast juice could be so easily changed and refreshed by adding a stick of celery to the mix or even a hand full of strawberries and some crushed ice. Just make sure that you are using all of your favorite fruits and vegetables, in a variety of groups and your juice recipes for weight loss will stay refreshing and keep your interest.

Party Like a Burundian! A Burundian Dowry Party & Wedding Feast ...

2012_08_18-DSC_7122-ED.jpgTwo dear friends were married last weekend, in a three-day explosion of fun, laughter, tribal drum squads, and really, really good African food. One half of this couple is from Texas. The other is from Burundi, a small East Africa nation between Rwanda and Tanzania. Her family brought rich cultural traditions to this wedding, including, to my surprise, a dowry ceremony. Have you ever been to an African wedding?

I've been to Africa (Kenya) but I had never attended a full-blown African-style celebration. This dowry party, which took place a couple days before my friends' wedding, was catered completely by my friend's extended family. It was held in a church hall, and we could smell the curry and spices as we walked in. The tables were set with bowls of samosas and delicious fried mandazi.

The dowry ceremony itself was a largely symbolic pageant stemming from old customs in Burundi (no actual dowry was handed over!). Representatives of the two families negotiated back and forth over the marriage arrangements, to much hilarity, and the ceremony ended with a parade of pretty girls pretending to be the bride. My friend nimbly picked his real bride out of the lineup, and the feast began!

2012_08_22-DowryParty.jpgLike other East African feasts, this Burundian meal was varied and rich. There were several kinds of rice, including one with toasty spices (my favorite thing on the plate!). There was saucy stewed cassava, spicy chicken, roasted cubes of beef, green beans, and chapati.

A very key element of a Burundian feast, however, is missing from the photo above, and that is banana wine. This homemade concoction is essential at any Burundian celebration, my friend told me. It's very sweet and tastes very much like banana. They say it's only wine, but I suspect it's closer to moonshine ? a glass will knock you over.

2012_08_18-DSC_7099.jpgBanana wine showed up again at the wedding reception itself, a couple days later, along with similar dishes of food (also cooked by the bride's family) and, to complement, homestyle family favorites from the bridegroom's family ? mac and cheese cooked by the bridegroom himself! And to top it off, the new bride and bridegroom were ushered into the reception by a surprise troupe of Burundian drummers who put on an amazing and vibrant performance (see them in action here, and read more about the significance of drums in Burundi culture).

Have you ever tried Burundian food? Have you ever been to an African wedding? It was such a pleasure to not only celebrate with our friend but to get a small taste of her family's culture ? with joy, a meeting of cultures, and plates full of good food.
